Yes — every resource on this page is completely free. The Washington County Commit 2 Quit program, Drop the Vape, Freedom from Smoking, and the Truth Initiative text program all cost nothing. No insurance. No appointment. No catch.
Not at all. Several options require no phone call whatsoever. You can text Truth Initiative by texting EXPROGRAM to 88709, chat online with a counselor through NYS Smoke Free, or download a free guide from the American Heart Association. Help is available in whatever format works best for you.
Because this time you have real support behind you. Most people need multiple attempts before quitting for good — that is completely normal and does not mean you failed. Research shows that people who use coaching or a structured program are significantly more likely to succeed. The Commit 2 Quit program, Freedom from Smoking, and the Truth Initiative text program are all designed for exactly where you are right now.
Start by listening rather than lecturing. Teens are more likely to open up when they feel safe rather than judged. The ALA Talk About Vaping module gives parents practical, script-ready guidance for starting the conversation. The Stanford REACH Lab also offers free evidence-based toolkits built specifically for parents navigating this situation. You do not have to figure this out alone.
All of the resources on this page are confidential. Texting the Truth Initiative program, calling the Commit 2 Quit line, or using Drop the Vape will not notify your parents, school, employer, or insurance company. Your information stays private.
Take a breath first. Your reaction in the next few hours matters more than you might think. Before you say anything, the ALA Talk About Vaping module can help you process your emotions and prepare a conversation that opens doors instead of closing them. The AHA Parents Guide also has practical scripts and infographics to help you know what to say — and what to avoid.
Most resources here are available statewide or nationally. Drop the Vape and the NYS Quitline are available to all New York State residents. Truth Initiative, Freedom from Smoking, and the Stanford REACH Lab toolkits are all available to anyone, anywhere.
Yes. Several programs are built specifically for younger people. Truth Initiative has helped over 680,000 young people quit through their free daily text coaching program — no app, no account needed. The Drop the Vape program is designed specifically for teens and young adults. The Washington County Youth Bureau also offers local education and prevention resources tailored to young people.
That is completely okay. Learning more is a great first step. The Stanford REACH Lab toolkits are a free, easy-to-read resource that covers everything you need to know without any pressure to act.
